We have already welcomed Autumn, here in the Northern Hemisphere. I love it when the leaves begin to change into the most beautiful hues and nature shows us the profound beauty that is the changing of the seasons. Soon to follow are the inevitable powerful winds that gust through to force the stubborn leaves off the trees, before winter truly sets in, so as they can be released into the natural cycle of life.
If we look around us change is present everywhere. Nature demonstrates this most clearly through the seasons, allowing us to experience the magnificence that each time of year has to offer. Within our households, our pets and family members never remain the same either. This is easier to observe when a puppy becomes a dog or a toddler eventually a teenager, though somehow we tend to think that once we become adults things should become more stable or somewhat set in stone.
Just as children do not remain babies forever, I believe that a healthy adult is one that continues to evolve and grow throughout their lives. In essence, the core of who we are does not necessarily change for that is our soul. And it is our soul that craves our constant expansion! For what is left of life if we cease to learn and expand who we are?
And yet, it is so easy to get stuck into ruts and live the same routine for decades without even knowing what has hit us…
“Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” ~ Stephen Hawking
Unfortunately, we are rarely able to acknowledge the beauty that change genuinely bestows upon us because it is hard for us to see the forest for the trees. As humans, we are under the gross misconception that if only everything could remain as is, then we would be safe forever. But this is nothing short of impossible and it’s a big lie.
Change is often messy and painful so on some level it makes sense that we are more fearful of change than we may be brave enough to admit. Hence, we seek comfort and security in things remaining the same, unwilling to bear another loss, even if our current situation is harming us! We would rather endure the suffering of our status quo than make the necessary changes that would lead us down a happier path. It’s insane really… but we are all guilty of this at some point or other.
“Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have to go through. Where people fail is that they wish to elect a state and remain in it. This is a kind of death.” ~ Anais Nin
Simply put, there is no way of avoiding change. Though change is actually not the issue – the way we view it is! What if instead of hiding away from the changes we are faced with, we have enough faith and trust in ourselves that we are able to overcome anything that life delivers?
Contrary to what our beliefs tell us, we are actually built to handle change simply by existing in this Universe! How would our lives change if we were able to find security and excitement in the ever-evolving phases that life consists of? How wonderful it would be if we were able to focus on what is calling us forward… ?
“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” ~ Socrates (Dan Millman, Way of the Peaceful Warrior)
Nothing is static. The Earth that we live on is in a constant rotation that oscillates around our Sun in tangent with numerous other planets, all perfectly rotating with inexplicable precision. If the Source that created us can make that happen with such grace and ease, why are we so fearful that we are not looked out for with the same accuracy? Why are we so distrustful of the forward movement of our lives?
“Stop being afraid of what could go wrong, and start being excited about what could go right.” ~ Tony Robbins
Sometimes change can be a smooth experience, possibly even laced with excitement, or accompanied by a feeling of relief. This could be when we land our dream job or marry the love of our life! And often, this occurs after a tumultuous time when we are so exhausted by the struggle and relentless resistance that we are so ready for the change! Hence, letting go of the old becomes less painful than welcoming the new. But does it have to reach this stage for a change to be embraced?
What if we decided to allow the changes in our life to happen, instead of being pulled along kicking and screaming? Change is going to happen whether we like it or not so what if we welcomed it with open arms? With full faith and trust that we are able to handle whatever life throws us… ?
How about we change our perception to the fact that life is actually working for us and not against us and seeking to deliver us experiences beyond our expectations, to enable us to be the best versions of ourselves? ? Now, that’s a thought! And one that I love! ?
I say “ Cheers to change!” and to demolishing all the layers of ‘protection’ that we have built around us over the years/lifetimes! ?
“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.” ~ Lao Tzu
What changes in your life are you resisting? ? How could you allow yourself to relax into the ebb and flow of life with greater ease? Taking the time to think about it could be life-changing… ?
